Greenberry and Sarah Seale

Greenberry Seale, (also spelled Green Berry Seale), born about 1797 in South Carolina, died October 1869, at the age of 72 years as indicated in the 1870 Shelby County Alabama Mortality Schedule. He first married, probably in South Carolina, to Sarah McCants, born about 1801-1810 in South Carolina, died before April 8, 1855 in Shelby County Alabama.

Green Berry and Sarah Seale are found in Shelby County Alabama as early as the 1820 census records. Green Berry, a brother to Abraham Seale, was the son of Elijah and Nancy Seale. Elijah was a brother to Enoch Seale, my great-great-great grandfather.

Greenberry and Sarah Seale had 10 children, 9 of which grew to adulthood; (1) Elijah Seale, born about 1819 in South Carolina, died August 26, 1877 in Shelby County Alabama. He married in Shelby County Alabama on January 14, 1840 to Sarah Elizabeth Horton, born April 6, 1824 in South Carolina, died March 22, 1918 in Shelby County Alabama. Her parents were Hardy J. Horton and Mary Baker. Their children were Emaline Seale, married William Farmer Bridges, John Alfred Seale, Sarah A. Seale, married Robert Patrick Barnett, Nancy Elizabeth Seale, married Dink Elijah Horton, Paralee W. Seale, Manerva Seale, and Rosa Lee Seale. The obituary, The Shelby Sentinel, dated Thursday, August 30, 1877, "Died, at his residence, near Shelby Iron Works, on Sunday evening, August 26th, Mr. Elijah Seale, in the 58th year of his age."  (2) Sarah Ann Seale, born about 1823 in Shelby County Alabama. She married Henry Bingham Horton, born about 1815 in South Carolina. His parents were Hardy J. Horton and Mary Baker. The children of Henry B. and Sarah Ann Horton were Samuel Virgil Horton, Yancy S. Horton, John B. Horton, Henrietta Horton, married George S. Duncan, Henry B. Horton, William B. Horton, and Daniel B. Horton. (3) Robert Seale, born March 13, 1826 in Shelby County Alabama, died January 8, 1881 in Shelby County Alabama. He married on December 24, 1846 in Shelby County Alabama to Mary J. Williams, born about March 1826. Their children were Green A. Seale, Mary A. Seale, Martha E. Seale, Sarah E. Seale, married Barney McHenry Armstrong, son of Westley Armstrong, Celia Adelaide Seale, married Judge E. Merrell, son of Wiley B. Merrell and Hannah Frances Mason, Caroline R. Seale, married William T. Arnett, son of James Carr Arnett and Mosley I. Horton, who was a daughter of Hardy J. Horton and Mary Baker, Samuel Seale, Madora Seale, married Larkin Newman Curlee, Emma Etta Seale, married George Franklin McGiboney, Robert H.T. Seale, Ella J. Seale, and Fannie Isabella  "Belle"  Seale, 1876-1949, a school teacher. (4) Mary Ann Seale, born about 1830 in Shelby County Alabama. She married on January 6, 1848 in Shelby County Alabama to Jackson P. Porter, born about 1822 in South Carolina, died in Shelby County Alabama on December 15, 1880. Their children were Madora C. Porter, married Henry W. Freeze, son of Henry Freeze and Laney Fuller, Arlevia Angeline Porter, married John Ceborn Armstrong, Sara Elizabeth Porter, married James M. Harris, Georgia Elizabeth Porter, married John Arthur Branch, son of Peter Branch and Caldona Horton, Mary Ann Porter, married Rev. William Herbert Connell, Green Berry Isaac Porter, Emma Sue Porter, married William Elijah Price, and Samuel J. Porter. (5) John A. Seale, born about 1831 in Shelby County Alabama, died July 1884 in Shelby County Alabama. He never married. Much of the information on the children of Green Berry and Sarah Seale are found in many various files of the "estate settlement" of John A. Seale in Shelby County Alabama in 1884. (6) Levi Seale, born about 1833 in Shelby County Alabama, died before June 10, 1880 in Union Parish Louisiana. He married on May 4, 1856 in Union Parish Louisiana to Rachael A. McAdams, daughter of Rev. J.T. and Julia McAdams. The daughter of Levi and Rachael Seale was Sarah A.F. Seale, born about 1858 in Union Parish Louisiana. She married William Henry Regan, born about February 1851 in Louisiana. In June 1900 he was "widowed" and was living with his son, William Levi Regan. (7) William Edward Seale, born October 29, 1836 in Shelby County Alabama, died September 3, 1901 in Shelby County Alabama. He married in Shelby County Alabama on January 8, 1862 to Amanda Masuria Freeze, born July 15, 1846, died August 9, 1927. Her parents were Henry Freeze and Laney Fuller. William and Amanda Seale are buried in Beaver Creek Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama. The June 5, 1900 Shelby County Alabama census records indicated that W.E. and Masuria Seale had 20 children born and 13 children living at that time. Fourteen of their children were Mary E. Seale, Allie L. Seale, married Thomas J. Bierley, Lula A. Seale, married Robert Lee Bierley, William Levi Seale, Walter Byron Seale, Elizabeth Seale, 1873-1945, Greenberry Seale, Benjamin F. Seale, Sallie E. Seale, 1880-1940, Sudie Pearl Seale, first married William T. Francis, 1875-1914, second marriage was to William Foster Baker, Emma E. Seale, married James Frank Kifer, Charles Lee Seale, Ollie L. Seale, married James C. Taylor, and Henry Hutsy Seale. (8) Henry Martin Seale, born about 1840 in Shelby County Alabama, died October 15, 1915 in Jefferson County Alabama. He married Anna Eliza Holcomb, born about 1842. Their children were Mary A. Seale, Samuel Henry E. Seale, Sarah M. Seale, married Henry Oshield Hardin, Lela I. Seale, John E. Seale, William Lee Seals, and Charles Clifton Seals. (9) Samuel John Seale, born April 19, 1845 in Shelby County Alabama, died March 22, 1915 in Shelby County Alabama. He married on May 6, 1869 in Shelby County Alabama to Martha E. Branch, born February 15, 1849 in Shelby County Alabama, died May 20, 1917 in Shelby County Alabama. Her parents were Peter R. Branch and Caldona Horton. Sammie and Martha Seale are buried in Beaver Creek Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama. Their children were John Thomas Seale, Robert Edgar Seale, James Carol Seale, Harvey Lee Seale, Peter Hutsy Seale, Elijah Price Seale, Greenberry Lee "Berry" Seale, Honnie Clay Seale, and Laura Bell Seale, married Robert Chester Gilley. A special recognition to Sara Bertie (Jones) Seale, wife of Robert Edward Seale, who was a son of John Thomas Seale, for sharing in 1998 a copy of "Samuel J. Seale Family Bible" and the photograph of Greenberry and Sarah Seale.

The second marriage, Green Berry Seale married in Shelby County Alabama on April 8, 1855 to Sarah Post, born June 25, 1800 in Georgia. They had no children. Her parents were William Belle Post, 1772-1846, and Dorcas Morris, 1772-1853. William B. Post was instrumental in Shelby County in the founding of the Alabama Baptist Convention in 1823. He died in Shelby County Alabama on October 22, 1846.
