Rev. William Seale

Rev. William Seale, a Methodist minister, born about 1775 in Marlborough District South Carolina, died February 27, 1851 in Shelby County Alabama. He was possibly the youngest child of Thomas Seale and Elizabeth Struthers. Thomas was a son of Anthony Seale and Anne Bristow. Also, Thomas was a brother to Charles Seale that married Lydia Muse. Charles and Lydia Seale were my great-great-great-great grandparents. During the War of 1812, Rev. William Seale was listed in the company commanded by Captain Tristam Bethea, formed in Marlborough District South Carolina. Mustered into service on September 24, 1814, Private William Seale furnished a substitute, one John Martin.

The other possible children of Thomas Seale and Elizabeth Struthers were Ann Seale, married Captain John James, Benjamin Seale, Thomas Seale, Jr., Hopkins Seale, and John Seale. As indicated in the 1840 Shelby County Alabama census John Seale was living next to his brother, Thomas Seale, Jr.  It is my theory that John had a son named William Seale who was married to Martha. The possible children of William and Martha Seale, all born in Alabama, were  (1) Anna Eliza Seale, born about 1830. As indicated in the 1850 Shelby County Alabama census she was living in the household with Farmer Moore and his family. She married in Shelby County Alabama on October 29, 1850 to James Rufus Armstrong.  (2) Charles Seale, born about 1832. As indicated in the 1850 Shelby County Alabama census he was was living in the household with Hampton Busby and his family.  (3) Thomas Seale, born April 5, 1833 in Shelby County Alabama, died September 27, 1905 in Union Parish Louisiana. He married in Shelby County Alabama on January 7, 1855 to Frances Post, 1830-1855, daughter of William Bell Post, Jr. and Elizabeth Merrell Post.  (4) Elizabeth Seale, born October 17, 1833, married in Shelby County Alabama on December 24, 1851 to Calvin Lee Mooney, 1830-1906). (Calvin Lee Mooney and Noel M. Thomas were half-brothers, with the same mother, Frances Mooney Thomas.) Elizabeth Mooney died in Shelby County Alabama on January 19, 1911, however, her death record indicates that she died January 26, 1911. Their children were *Abram Mooney *Nancy Henrietta Mooney, married John W. Armstrong *Virginia Caroline Mooney, married Joseph M. Blackmon *Rachel Mooney, died June 9, 1877 in Shelby County Alabama *John Lee Mooney *Nora Mooney, married George W. Stone *Noel Mooney *Mary Emma Mooney, never married, died May 14, 1945 in Shelby County Alabama *Elbert Mooney *Nathan Mooney *Francis Adaline Mooney, married James R. Moore *Thomas Jefferson Mooney *Marlin Mooney. (5) James Pinkney Seale, born February 18, 1835. In 1847 in Shelby County Alabama Pinkney Seale was  "bound as an apprentice to Blanton Moore"  and as indicated in the 1850 Shelby County Alabama census was living in the household with Blanton Moore and family. On August 10, 1856 in Shelby County Alabama he married Mary Jane Bridges. James P. Seale enlisted in Co. "D" 31st Regiment Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A., and died March 3, 1865 in Davidson County Tennessee.  (5) Kizey Seale, born 1836-1840 in Shelby County Alabama. She married in Shelby County Alabama on September 18, 1855 to James M. Post, 1832-1886, son of William Bell Post, Jr. and Elizabeth Merrell Post.  (6) Mahaley Seale, born August 15, 1844, married Noel M. Thomas, 1843-1920. (Noel M. Thomas and Calvin Lee Mooney were half-brothers, with the same mother, Frances Mooney Thomas.) The obituary for Mahaley Thomas indicates that she died January 12, 1911 in Shelby County Alabama, however, her death record indicates that she died January 19, 1911 and her grave marker in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery indicates that she died October 9, 1910. Their children were *Joel Oliver Thomas *Nathaniel Harmon Thomas *Pernecie Parlie Thomas, married William Meadow Davis *Mary Elizabeth Thomas, married James J. Dees *Arvilla Louisa Thomas, married John Henry Bentley *Minerva Mamie "Mayo" Thomas, married Jesse Edward Merrell, son of Judge E. Merrell and Celia Adelaide Seale Merrell.

Rev. William Seale first married Temperance Crosland Pearce, born December 27, 1774 in Georgia. Her parents were Edward Crosland and Ann Snead. Temperance was first married to Arthur Pearce and they had one child, Arthur Pearce, Jr., died at birth. At the time of her marriage to Rev. William Seale she was a widow.

Rev. William Seale, after the death of his wife, married Mrs. Rachel Corloss, born about 1798. She was the widow of Robertson Corloss, a prominent landowner and Justice of the Peace in Marlborough District South Carolina. William and Rachel Seale had no children. The Shelby Sentinel, Columbiana, Alabama, dated Thursday, March 28, 1878 indicates;  "Died, near this place, on Friday the 22d inst., Mrs. R.J. Seale."  On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "Rachel Seale, wife of William Seale, was deceased."

The children of William and Temperance Seale, as indicated in his last will and testament that was probated in Shelby County Alabama on June 9, 1851, were   (1) Ann Seale, 1802-1888, married Dr. Peter McIntyre, 1801-1854, a notable teacher in both South Carolina and Georgia. He was Dean of the Southern Botanical College at Macon, Georgia and in about 1849 moved to Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, where he practiced medicine according to the Homeopathic school and was thus a pioneer in that practice. He was a Royal Arch Mason and is buried in the Masonic Square in Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Montgomery County Alabama. Ann McIntyre is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, Pike County Alabama. However, they do not have a grave marker. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "Ann McIntyre resides in Troy, Pike County Alabama."  The obituary, The Troy Messenger, dated Thursday, December 20, 1888,  "Mrs. Ann McIntyre died at the home of her son-in-law, Capt. F.M. Pennington, in this city, last Thursday the 13th inst. She was born in Marlborough District, South Carolina, May 4th, 1802, and had entered her 87th year. She came to Alabama many years ago and settled at Montgomery, where her husband died before the late war. For some time previous to the war she resided in Troy, but returned to Montgomery where she lived up to a few years ago, when she came back to this place. Mrs. McIntyre was a devout member of the Presbyterian church and in all the relations of life she bore herself so as to gain the love and esteem of all. She was the mother of a large family of sons and daughters, all of whom survive her, save one, and occupy high positions among the best people of the state. She has gone to her rest, after a long and useful life with full assurance of a home prepared for the christian in the land of eternal day."  However, the  "Register of Death"  as recorded by Dr. P.H. Brown, M.D. in Pike County Alabama indicates that  "Mrs. McIntire"  date of death was December 18, 1888. The children of Dr. Peter and Ann McIntyre were Edward Legare McIntyre, 1829-1869, an attorney and Alabama State Senator, Archibald Crosland McIntyre, 1832-1890, a well known photographer that in 1861 made the only picture of the ceremonies which took place at the Capitol of Alabama when Jefferson Davis was inaugurated president of the Confederate States, Ann Page King  "Hannah"  McIntyre, 1834-1916, married Wiley Person Mangum Cozart, James Hamilton McIntyre,  "Lt. 1 Alabama Calvary, C.S.A.,"  1837-1903, an attorney, Alabama Supreme Court Judge, and State Legislature Representative, and Annie Katherine McIntyre, 1844-1925, married Francis M. Pennington.  (2) Eliza Seale, married Francis Hinds. As indicated on January 7, 1844 in Shelby County Alabama, at the time William Seale wrote his last will and testament,  "... to Ann and William Hynes, my grand children...."  As noted in Shelby County Alabama, filed October 30, 1842,  "John Neely have been appointed guardian of the estate of Ann T. Hinds, minor heir of Francis Hinds, deceased."  On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "Eliza Hines resides in Lynchburg, Sumter County South Carolina."  (3) Mary Seale, born February 7, 1806, died January 23, 1856 and is buried in Forest Grove Cemetery in Claiborne Parish Lousiana. She married John Neely, Jr. and the 1850 census indicates they were living in Shelby County Alabama. His parents were John Neely, Sr., died March 20, 1838, and Rebecca (Edwards) Neely, died February 1, 1845. They died in Shelby County Alabama and are buried in Smith-Mahan Cemetery, now located in Bibb County Alabama. Sarah Ann Neely,  "Daughter of John and Mary Neely", died October 22, 1845 and is buried in Smith-Mahan Cemetery. The third marriage of John Neely, Jr. was in Claiborne Parish Louisiana on October 14, 1858 to Mrs. Ann Elizabeth (Jones) Thompson. His first marriage, before his marriage to Mary Seale, was in Bibb County Alabama in 1838 to Martha Mahan. After the death of his third wife on February 14, 1873, he moved to Dodd City, Fannin County Texas and became a dry-goods merchant in partnership with his son-in-law, Howard S. Randall. John Neely, Jr. died on November 10, 1884 and is buried in (Block 38, no grave marker) Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, Fannin County Texas.  The children of John and Mary Neely were John T. Neely, 1840-1909, married in 1872 to Margarett Mae "Maggi" Brown, 1842-1936. He served in Company "L", 12th Louisiana Regiment Infantry, C.S.A. He is buried in Armstrong County Texas.  Rebecca T. Neely, 1844-1883, married in 1871 to Capt. John T.R. Jouett. She is buried in Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, Fannin County Texas. Mary Ann E. Neely, 1848-1887, married in Claiborne Parish Louisiana in 1865 to Howard S. Randall. She is buried in Fannin County Texas. (4) Jesse Seale, born April 25, 1808 in South Carolina, died August 14, 1867 in Upshur County Texas. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale did not indicate any information on Jesse Seale or his children. However, he was mentioned in his father's last will and testament, dated January 7, 1844 in Shelby County Alabama. Rev. Jesse Seale, a Baptist Minister, was highly regarded in every community that he served. In about 1825 he served as pastor of Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Shelby County Alabama;  he was appointed in 1836 to travel as a missionary for nine months within the bounds of the Canaan Association of United Baptists, based in Jefferson County Alabama;  and in April 1837 Elder Jesse Seal assisted in the establishment of Mud Creek Baptist Church in Jefferson County Alabama. As indicated in the April 1859 Minutes of Round Island Baptist Church, which was located ten or twelve miles west of Athens, Limestone County Alabama,  "Our beloved Brother Jesse Seal has lived in our midst for the last twenty years, having served us as pastor for seventeen years of that time ...."  Also, during his stay in Limestone County Alabama he preached at Wofford's Section, which was five or six miles northeast of Huntsville, Madison County Alabama. His wife was Ann Colquitt. Their children were Rebecca Seale, married John P. Wofford, David Seale, Sarah Jane Seale, Rev. Newton Alexander Seale, Elvie H. Seale, married Walter Scott Hopkins, Henry B. Seale, and Anna C. Seale.   The obituary, Tennessee Baptist (Memphis, Tennessee), November 16, 1867 "Elder Jesse Seal was born in South Carolina, Marlborough District, April 25, 1808, departed this life, of flux, August 14, 1867. Father Seal professed religion and joined the Baptist Church in his native State when quite young, and comenced his ministerial career in his twenty-first year. It is not known in what year he emigrated to Alabama. After a short time there, he removed to Madison county, and thence to Limestone county, of the same State. Was Moderator of the Association for twenty consecutive years, rode as missionary some two or three years. In 1858 he, with his family again removed to Upsher county, Texas; had, during his stay in Texas been engaged as pastor of several churches, and of Coffeeville Baptist Church from its organization up to the time of his demise, a period of eight years ... He has left the companion of his youth with several children, the church and many friends to mourn his loss, but we sorrow not as those without hope." (5) Edward Crosland Seale, born April 19, 1810 in South Carolina, died January 30, 1894 in Shelby County Alabama, and is buried in Sessions-Seale Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama. He was a member of the  "Masonic Lodge No. 70"  in Shelby County Alabama. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "Edward C. Seale resides in Shelby County Alabama.  (6) David William Seale was ordained in 1835 as a Methodist Minister and subsequently became one of the most widely known Methodist preachers in the Carolinas, riding untold thousands of miles on horseback, preaching thousands of sermons during his sixty year career. He died on "April 6, 1895" and at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Methodist Episcopal Church conference for the year, an obituary, accompanied by a picture of him, was entered into the minutes. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "David W. Seale resides in Shelby County Alabama."  (7) Elizabeth Seale, born December 3, 1812, died December 26, 1891. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that "Elizabeth Taylor resides in Wellborn, Suwannee County Florida." Her second marriage on October 6, 1841 in Hamilton County Florida was to Rev. John J. Taylor, 1811-1882, a Methodist Minister. They are buried in McClellan Cemetery in Wellborn, Suwannee County Florida. They had no children, however, from her previous marriage to Fernando Lowe, 1807-1841, Elizabeth had two children, Philip E. Lowe, 1835-1892, and Mary J. Ivey Lowe, 1838-1902, married Jesse Taylor McLeran.  (8) Daniel Thomas Seale, born January 6, 1819 in South Carolina, died February 7, 1899 in Howard County Arkansas. On July 13, 1885 in Shelby County Alabama, Daniel T. Seale indicated that he "resides in Shelby County Alabama."  He was one of the earliest domestic missionaries to preach in the destitute areas of the Shelby Baptist Association, traveling on horseback, knowing that little or no money would be forthcoming. In August 1860 Limeville Baptist Church was constituted in Shelby County Alabama with fifteen members, the pastor was D.T. Seale. In 1861 he was pastor of Union Baptist Church, which in 1883 changed their name to Helena Baptist Church, Shelby County Alabama. In 1867 he was serving the Providence Baptist Church, located about eight miles south of Montevallo, Shelby County Alabama, now a part of the Chilton County Baptist Association. As indicated in The Calera Journal, dated Wednesday, April 12, 1893,  "Tom Seales, a former resident of Calera and an Independent Baptist preacher, but now a citizen of Ochmulgee, Perry County Alabama, and a follower of the Campbellite religion and third party politics, was in the city Saturday and Monday."  Rev. D.T. Seals is buried in Old Union Cemetery in Howard County Arkansas. He married in Shelby County Alabama on November 9, 1845 to Emeline L. Seale, born April 4, 1829 in Shelby County Alabama, died August 9, 1911 in Howard County Arkansas. Emeline L. Seale,  "wife of Rev. D.T. Seale," is buried in Athens Cemetery in Howard County Arkansas. It is believed that her parents were Charles and Eleanor Seale. Therefore, Daniel Thomas Seale was a "second cousin once removed"  to his wife, Emeline L. Seale. Her father, Charles Seale, was a brother to Herod Seale, my great-great grandfather. As indicated in a letter dated May 27, 1884 to Anne McIntyre from D.T. Seale,  "... bros. Ed and David a few days ago were well, a letter from sister E. Taylor today says all well except Bro. Taylor he was very low and not expected to recover, nothing though from Bro. Jesse's family lately, a letter from little John Neely not long since says all well, old John living yet and a widower, living with his son John in Texas. I am still in Perry County Alabama yet where I have been for the last 3 years ... I the youngest now 65 ...."  The children of Rev. D.T. and Emeline Seale were Henry Thomas Seale, Edward Franklin Seale, 1847-1934, William J. Seale, David Alexander Seale, 1852-1929, Mary D. Seale, 1855-1916, married David Newton McFarland, Phillip P. Seale, 1856-1920, Martha Jane Seale, 1857-1932, married James A. Sirmon, Charles H. Seale, 1860-1939, Robert Bell Seale, 1862-1942, and Benjamin L. Seale, 1865-1886.

Edward Crosland "Ned" Seale first married in Bibb County Alabama on December 11, 1837 to Desdemona Mahan, born about 1822, died December 6, 1858 in Shelby County Alabama. She was the daughter of James and Susannah Mahan. Judge Joseph L. Peters marriage notes indicate "Desdemona Mahan married Ned Seale."  After the death of his wife, his second marriage was in Shelby County Alabama on September 10, 1877 to Mrs. Caroline (McGinnis) Large. It is believed that her first husband was Jonathan Large that died in Shelby County Alabama in September 1859. She had no children. Carrie Seale died in Shelby County Alabama on July 4, 1910. The children of Edward and Desdemona Seale were  (1) George William Seale, 1841-1903, married in Shelby County Alabama on December 26, 1875 to Obedience Caroline "Dollie" Armstrong Kinman, born January 22, 1853, and died in Shelby County Alabama on January 20, 1929. Her parents were Martin McHenry Armstrong and Mary E. Crim. Her first marriage was in Shelby County Alabama on January 23, 1870 to James Kinman. The children of James Kinman and Bedi, as she was often called, were Albert Frank Kinman, 1870-1874, William McHenry Kinman, 1872-1952, and Isaac Mason "Ike" Kinman, 1874-1939. Her sister, Martha Malissa Armstrong, 1864-1918, married William Nathaniel Keith, 1862-1940, son of Jessie Jonas Keith and Louisa Winston Zimmerman. (2) Mary J. Seale, born October 3, 1843, died November 30, 1921 in Chilton County Alabama. She married in Shelby County Alabama in 1866 to William M. Johnson, 1845-1924. They are buried in Sessions Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama.  (3) Elizabeth A. Seale, born about 1844. (4) Susan M. Seale, born about 1846. On October 14, 1868 in Shelby County Alabama she married George Washington Woolley. After her death, his second marriage in Shelby County Alabama on april 18, 1872 was to Nancy B. Thompson.  (5) James A. Seale, born January 4, 1847, died September 13, 1940 in Smith County Texas. James A. Seale married in Shelby County Alabama on December 28, 1868 to Mary E. Eddings. Mary Eliza Eddings, 1851-1921, was the daughter of Ezekiel and Mary Eddings.  (6) William A. Seale, born December 21, 1849, died June 13, 1903 in Shelby County Alabama. He is buried in Sessions Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama.  (7) Rachael Seale, born about 1852.  (8) Ruth R. Seale, born July 1854. She married Allen B. Crump in Shelby County Alabama on January 31, 1878.  (9) Edward Filmore Seale, 1857-1927. He married in 1882 in Coryell County Texas to Isabell C. "Belle" McReynolds, 1863-1936, daughter of Stephen E. McReynolds and Nancy L. Toony. E.F. and Belle Seale are buried in Holly Springs Cemetery in Van Zandt County Texas.  (10) Destimonia E. Seale, born November 22, 1858, died June 11, 1925. She married in Chilton County Alabama on April 30, 1885 to Patrick Ferdnand Reeves, 1857-1925, son of Joseph Reeves and Mary Moore. They are buried in Moore Cemetery in Jefferson County Alabama.

E.C. Seale and Caroline Seale, his second wife, in the presence of James Seale, William Seale, Filmore Seale, Ruth Crump and her husband, and Desdemona Rives and her husband granted land on January 6, 1890 in Shelby County Alabama to Enon Baptist Church.

The children of George William Seale and Obedience Caroline (Armstrong) Kinman were  (1) John Thomas Seale, born December 13, 1876, died August 22, 1941 in Shelby County Alabama. He married on April 21, 1895 in Shelby County Alabama to Amy Alice Bell Zora Wilson, born July 14, 1873, died December 5, 1937 in Shelby County Alabama. They are buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Chilton County Alabama. Their children were William Edgar Seale, Charles H. Seale, Flossie Bell Seale, Bernice Thomas Seale, Zora May Seale, and Robert Henry Seale.  (2) Edward Lee Seale, born September 22, 1879, died April 23, 1933 in Shelby County Alabama. He married March 16, 1902 in Shelby County Alabama to Mary Elizabeth Prestridge, born May 11, 1871, died December 25, 1962 in Shelby County Alabama. They are buried in Richardson-Randall Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama. Her parents were William H. Prestridge and Anna E. Willingham. The children of Edward and Betty Seale were Floyd Lee Seale, John Edward Seale, George William Seale, Owen Mason Seale, and Freddie Reese Seale.  (3) Nonnie Dell Seale, born November 5, 1881, died October 20, 1933 in Jefferson County Alabama. She married on January 29, 1902 in Shelby County Alabama to John Frank Shaw, 1870-1954. They are buried in New Salem Cemetery in Shelby County Alabama. The children of Frank and Nonnie Shaw were Annie Mae Shaw, John Day Shaw, George William Shaw, Lillie Pearl Shaw, and Charles Cecil Shaw.  (4) George Morgan "Punk" Seale, born August 11, 1890, died February 8, 1946 in Montgomery County Alabama. He is buried in Old Rock Springs Cemetery in Chilton County Alabama.
