20th Al Inf., Co. G - "Cahaba Valley Guards"

The following are men that served in this company. If you have additional Civil War information about your ancestor in this company, please use the link below to submit to me to add to the "Soldiers" section.

Officers:

DAVIS, John W. Capt. (captured, Vicksburg, 4 July 63; exchanged there, 8 July 63; Appointed, Major, 11 Feb 64, to rank from 18 Sept 63)

NAVE, George Solon, Capt. (promoted, Capt., 17 May 64, to rank from 29 April 64; wounded, Kolb's Farm, GA, 22 June 64; retired to Invalid Corps, 15 Dec 64)

CROSS, A. J., 1st Lt. (resigned, 26 Nov 61) [Note: He was Sgt. A.J. Cross Jr. of company G, 20th Alabama Inf. He was a 1st Lt. but resigned after the battle of Bakers Creek, Miss. He reduced himself in rank to 4th Sgt. He was killed on December 17th, 1864 in rear guard action during Hood's retreat from Nashville. He was probably killed at or around Spring Hill TN. He was under Lt. Gen. Steven D. Lee's command. I am not sure but I think he is buried at the Mt. Olivet cemetery in Nashville. I'm still gathering info on his exact burial spot. Nobody in the Cross family has been able to find him in over 140 years. My Mother was a Cross and he was her Great Grandad. Submitted by Scott Swann

DESHAZO, Rufus M., 1st Lt., Capt. (promoted, Capt., 15 March 64, to rank from 18 Sept 63; resigned, 29 April 64, for health problems)

CAST [COST?], Henry H. [Henry W.?], 2nd Lt. (resigned, 11 March 62)

HARRIS, Joseph West, 2nd Lt., Capt. (promoted, Capt., to rank from 15 Dec 64; paroled, Talladega, AL, 29 May 65)
The Alabama state archives have two records which could be the same soldier:
1. J. W. Harris: Private, enlisted in G/21Ala 02/16/1861 (and nothing else)
2. Joseph Harris: “Letter dated 1933/04/14 from Adjutant General's Office, Washington DC to Director, Department of Archives and History, State of Alabama: "The records show that Joseph W. Harris, 1st Sergeant, Company G, 20 Regiment Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army was enlisted September 9, 1861, at Montevallo, Shelby County, Alabama by John W. Davis. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant April 14, 1862. He was captured July 4, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled July 8, 1863, at same place. Hospital Muster Roll of French's Division Hospital, at Shelby Springs, Alabama, for July 1 to December 31, 1863, shows him present. He was paroled May 29, 1865, at Talladega, Alabama, with rank of Captain."

Harris married Josephine Wilson in Shelby County, Alabama on December 31, 1861. My grandmother knew that he had been an officer because his bride visited him at Vicksburg and was escorted by a more senior officer on the last train out before the siege. That escorting officer was carrying a request for relief to the Confederate cavalry. I have an image of the individual surrender (attached) that he signed at Vicksburg on July 8, 1863, witnessed by a major of the 20th Ohio Infantry Regiment.
