He left the regiment on furlough in January 1865. A descriptive roll signed by Capt. Joab Goodson, was was in command of the company at the time, indicated that John Columbus Deason had achieved the rank of 5th Sgt. and was to receive pay at rank from Nov. 1, 1864. After his furlough was over, he remained in Alabama and joined a cavalry unit until the end of the war. John was the brother of James William Deason of the same regiment.
