Grandfather Isaac Smith served in the 44th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company H. He was captured in the Battle of the Wilderness and died at a prisoner of war camp in Elmira NY. He is buried in grave #2828 there. The 44th was part of Law's Alabama Brigade which also included the 4th, 15th, 47th, and 48th Alabama Infantry Regiments. Law's Brigade was part of General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in Longstreet's 1st Army Corps. Hood's Division.
