Probate of Estate of Martin Kirsch

As recorded in Probate Judge's Loose Papers, Bibb County, and microfilm of Bibb County probate court records in Alabama Department of Archives and History.

NOTE: Martin P. Kersh's estate was much larger than the usual estate probated in Bibb County in this time period, not because he was a particularly wealthy man, but because he operated a mercantile store, Kersh & Sease, in Centreville. He died intestate, so both his personal property and the property of his business had to be inventoried and then publicly sold. The lists of items sold are fascinating to genealogists and historians because they, first, often include names not seen in other documents of the period and, second, they give valuable clues to what life was like for these early settlers.

All of the documents are handwritten, some on scraps of paper torn from some larger document, and sometimes the writing is not legible. The transcriber has made guesses about some of the sale items/names, indicated by question marks. For clarity, members of the immediate Kersh family are identified by their full names, although they are listed by initials in the documents.

Martin was the oldest son of David and Elizabeth Sease Kersh, born in 1819 in Barnwell District, SC, before the family migrated to Bibb County about 1824-25. He married Lucinda H. Cleveland Brown, widow of Willis Brown, in April 1842 in Bibb County.

31 March 1855 - Willis W.C. Cleveland was appointed administrator of the estate by the probate judge.

Heirs to estate: Lucinda H. Kersh, widow, and guardian of the minor children; son Wilson L.F. Kersh, daughters Paralee (Emily Pardee) and Clemanda (Mary C.A.) Kersh. On 30 August 1877, Mary Clay Kersh was declared the only living heir to the estate; Wilson, who served in the Civil War, and Emily Paralee having died by that time.
