Samuel Fancher, Some Descendants
submitted by Martha Smith

Generation No. 1

1. Samuel4 Fancher* (Benjamin3, Richard2, David (Jean) John Cordonnier Fouche1 (Fauche)) was born April 19, 1767 in Morris Co, NJ, and died Aft. 1850 in Bibb Co, AL. He married (2) Phebe Adams in Sevier County, TN. She was born Abt. 1772 in TN.
Notes for Samuel Fancher*:
4/3/2001 - Larry Parks <lparks3@bellsouth.net> wrote --
In the "Fancher Book", Paul Fancher(of Atlanta, GA) says Samuel Fancher married Phebe Adams and probably died in Bibb County. They are buried at (Little) Cahaba Valley Baptist Church in an unmarked Grave.
SAMUEL FANCHER - (son of Benjamin, grandson of Richard)
Samuel Fancher was born about 1767 in Maryland, according to census records and married Phebe Adams. He was in Bibb Co., AL in 1850 and is believed to have died there. Probably Samuel and Phebe are buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church (Carleton Hill) in an unmarked grave.
Samuel was in Sevier County, TN in 1795 when he appeared on a list of electors and he received a 47 acre land grant in 1812. The 1895 diary of a nephew says he went to Alabama in 1811 but Phebe joined the West Fork of Little Pigeon River Baptist Church by experience in July 1812 and left in September 1819 (presumably when the family left for AL).
===============
Note for Richard Fancher, his twin brother, from Paula Faye Fancher may also apply to Samuel :
" The 1816 census off Monroe Co., Mississippi Territory shows Richard and 9 children with son (James) living nearby. " -
Another note says: " Richard died August 21, 1849 in Bibb Co., AL and is buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church, Carleton Hill, which he and 10 others founded in 1817." --- Maybe Samuel was one of these ?

------------------
From Paul Fancher's book ---
- Thornton Fancher was born about 1818 in TN, probably Sevier Co., and moved to Bibb County, AL at a very early age.
- He married January 14, 1844 in Shelby Co., AL to Harriet Lemley (born-1821;died-May 9, 1890).
- Thornton died November 10, 1897 and is buried at Union Grove Baptist Church in Randolph, AL(Bibb Co.)
- Thornton is said to have outlived all of his brothers and sisters.
- His full name may have been William Thornton Fancher because his grandson at Sterrett, AL was named after him. ( NOTE: see Jeff Curtis' notes under Wm. Thornton Fancher 2) **
-Thornton enlisted in the Co-B (?), 3rd Alabama Reserves on May 10, 1864 and served the remainder of the war.
The story is told that he became very homesick and slipped off from his unit for a few days visit at home. He stayed in the woods near his house and Harriet would visit and bring food while concealing his presence from the children.
Harriet managed the home and farm while her husband was away. She buried valuables and good clothes and drove the livestock into the woods to keep them from roving bands of soldiers. One old cow was left at the barn and the children dressed in ragged clothes so both armies would feel sorry for them.

3rd AL RESERVE INFANTRY REGIMENT -
Ten companies of exempts and senior reserves formed this command at Camp Withers near Selma, AL, Aug 5, 1864. Gen. Withers voided the original org. & made new appointments on Aug 16, 1864. The Confederacy's collapse found this rgt. scattered among var. military posts in central AL. Some survivors surrendered w/ Gen. Richard Taylor's army @ Meridian, MS, May 11, 1865. Most recd. individual paroles shortly afterward @ points such as Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery & Selma.
Col. Wm. M. Brooks - was the original Field Officer in charge, apptd. 8/16/1864. He submitted his resignation 1/24/1865, being overage and noting his appointment was provisional. Lt. W.D. Bulger, formerly of the 47th Ala Inf. was appointed Major Aug 5, 1864; then apptd. Lt. Col. Aug 16, 1864.
Co- K was organized & mustered into C.S. service at Columbiana on May 17, 1864 and had Capt. Payton King as it's commanding officer. It was hereafter called "Payton King's Company". Capt. King stated that, " The list of this Co. frequently varied, as new men were sent to it & the oldest & most inefficient were discharged. The Service was odious & inglorious & I staid with it to the close of the war from a sense of duty." Near the end of the war this company was absorbed into the 62nd AL Infantry.
Also in this unit were: W.W. Carden; Thornton Fancher (not on the roll shown here, see above...) ms

He lived & farmed many years at Lawley before moving to Uniontown about 1906. Yancey was born in 1847 and died about 1912, being buried in Selma. He married Lulu Lucas (born 1850 and died after Mr. Fancher).

I read in the paper of your interest in the Fancher family of Montevallo and will give you all of the information I have on my side of the family and would appreciate anything you may have pertaining to my direct line. My grandmother was - Cora Unora Fancher - daughter of Luanne Lucas and Yancey Fancher. I do not have dates of their marriage but they also had - a daughter named Tobitha who married a Mr. Browning of Mobile; a daughter Gina who married a Lolly and lived in Uniontown;
Gina and her husband Lolley (last name) had at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. One son's name was Elbert Lolley (owned a plumbing company in Selma); another son - head of the cotton mill in Uniontown;
daughter - Deanie - married but I do not know her married name.
My grandmother also had 2 other sisters at least - One married a Scott and had 2 daughters that I knew about - Miss Lillie and Miss Lena Scott. They never married and lived in Selma. I knew them as a child growing up there. They are both deceased now.
Another sister to my grandmother Cora - married a Tucker but I was not familiar with the family other than to know that some of them lived in Burnsville, AL at one time.
Grandma also had a brother - William "Will"; and I understand another brother who lived in Tuscaloosa. That is all I know about them. I do understand that Will had a couple of children but that is it.
My grandmother Cora married Robert Cook and they had my father - Barney Cook.
She's buried in Selma, AL.

Notes for Nannice Coulin "Nan" Fancher*: 3/31/2001 - From: Larry Parks < lparks3@bellsouth.net > --
To answer your questions, I looked in the Book " Richard Fancher(1700 -1764) of Morris Co, N.J." by Paul Buford Fancher. The author has Thornton Fancher born about 1818 married Harriet Lemley on January 14, 1844 in Shelby County and buried at Union Grove Cemetery in Randolph, Alabama. They had 12 Children, among them was Col. Manus Lemley, born January 30, 1848 and Nannice (1848 - January 24 , 1923). Nannice married William Carden on December 5, 1875 . ( I have made a note to myself in this book that a copy of Thornton's will is located in the Bibb County Probate office).
My grand-mother (Emma) was the daughter of Thomas M. Fancher. I would also mention that my grand-parents ( Emma and Clay Owen) lived closed to Bulldog bend and had some Lemleys (Ruby and Junie ) as neighbors. They are buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church.
I hope that I have helped you, Larry
( MY NOTE: This church is in Bibb Co. abt. 5 miles out of Montevallo on Hwy. 25 just past WIlton, going toward Centerville).

Larry, saw your post on Genforum while looking for some of my FANCHER connections in Shelby & Bibb Co, AL. Was hoping you still work on that line. Not knowing much about my NANCY ANN FANCHER's parents or her line, I wonder if you have either of these folks in your database ?

My g-g.parents were Nancy Ann FANCHER (4/12/1848 - 1/24/1923) in Shelby Co, AL mar. William Cary CARDEN (2/19/1854 - 12/16/1923). The're both buried in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, near Chelsea in Shelby Co, AL.

Also, we're related somehow to MANUS LEMLEY FANCHER (1849-1927) who mar. Ann Hazeltine CARDEN (6/19/1852- 12/9/1875) in Shelby Co, AL. Mother said that some of her CARDEN-FANCHER line was also in Bibb Co, AL.

9/2001 - Nannice COULIN Fancher's name is interesting.
In Irish folk lore a COULIN is : a sweetheart with long curling locks of hair.
Thomas Moore, from Irish Melodies, Vol. 1
< http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/eire/coolin.htm >
Though the last glimpse of Erin with sorrow I see,
Yet wherever thou art shall seem Erin to me;
In exile thy bosom shall still be my home,
And thine eyes make my climate wherever we roam.
2. To the gloom of some desert or cold rocky shore,
Where the eye of the stranger can haunt us no more,
I will fly with my Coulin, and think the rough wind
Less rude than the foes we leave frowning behind.
3. And I'll gaze on thy gold hair as graceful it wreathes,
And hang o'er thy soft harp as wildly it breathes;
Nor dread that the cold hearted Saxon will tear
One chord from that harp, or one lock from that hair.*
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
*- "In the twenty-eighth year of the reign of Henry VIII, an Act was made respecting the habits, and dress in general, of the Irish, whereby all persons were constrained from being shorn or shaven above the ears, or from wearing Glibbes, or Coulins (long locks) on their heads, or hair on their upper lip, called Crommeal. On this occasion, a song was written by one of our bards, in which an Irish virgin is made to give the preference to her dear Coulin (or the youth with the flowing locks) to all strangers (by which the English were meant), or those who wore their habits. Of this song, the air alone has reached us,and is universally admired." -- Walker's Historical Memoirs of Irish Bards. p. 134. About this period, harsh measures were taken against the Irish Mistrels.

My Great Grandfather - Col. Manus Lemley Fancher mar. Ann Haseltine Carden. Both are bur. @ Prospect Baptist Church, Westover, AL
My G-G- Grandfather - (William) Thornton Fancher
My G-G-G- Grandfather - Benjamin Fancher
My G-G-G-G-Grandfather - Richard Fancher, from Stamford, CT
(Except for Arlyn Fancher and Jim Fancher this is what I'd found out thru my own research, so this is a verify...MAS)
He also wrote in several other names, but IDK how they fit in. Huston Fancher, Cahaba Heights, B'ham,
(ph.967-1476); and Paul Fancher, 1479 Ashwoody Ct., NE, Atlanta, GA, 30319 -- may be sons or brothers of Jim Fancher. They seem to be contemporary. Then there's a few names assos. with Watkins Bookstore, evidently in B'ham. Fred D. Fanshir, Florence , ONT, CANADA; and Johnson Fancher.
The words "Fancher Train -- Amelia Bean" were written in, with no explanation (see other notes in this section for the explanation.)
