Notes From "The City Gazette", of Charleston, SC, dated Wednesday July 26, 1826; 'died at his residence in Fairfield District, South Carolina, on the seventeenth ultimate Mr. James Steele, age 65'. His will was recorded 7-11-1828 and named "my wife", and children Robert, Henry, William, John, James, Margaret McGill, and Ann Morgan. Sold a parcel of land 12-2-1794 to Alexander Kinkaid, described as being a part of an "original tract' granted to Robert Steele, recorded in Book DDD, p.267, and left by said Robert Steele to his wife and four children". Deed Book L, p.60-61.

Hello Herman,
I was looking at a book entitled, "Bibb, The First Hundred Years." In it, the author mentioned a James Henry sueing a Charles Reach. I forgot to write down the year, I was in a hurry I guess. You had sent me
so much information about the family of Charity Reach who married William Pearson, I thought you might know this Charles Reach, and maybe even James
Henry. I know very little, really nothing about the Henry family. This is what I know; the Reverand John Steele(1798-1857) was married to Nancy Major (1805-1873). The father of Nancy Major, was James Major, and her mother was Sarah Henry. That is all I know. I received some information from a Jane Williams--downyonder@localink4.com. She seemed to think that James Majure was the son of John Majure who came from Ireland aboard the ship the "Earl of Hillsborough," in 1767. Ms. Williams lists Sarah Henry as the wife of James Majur/Major, but she like me, knows nothing more than that. I was hoping you might know something about the Henry family in Bibb County, and maybe from there I might could piece something together. I appreciate your time.

Notes Robert Steel came with his wife and family to Bibb Co. soon after Alabama became a state. He apparently served as a commissioner (Minutes of Commissioner's Court 1828-31, p.30-31, Bibb County, Alabama , "Robert Steel, third precinct, is appointed by court, et al, to make such alteration of the road leading from the falls of Cahaba, Centreville to Tuscaloosa--about 1/4 mile, between 3rd and 4th post, as may comport the general good, ect., and report at the next term of the court." Also in same term: "Robert Steele, Overseer of second precinct for road from Centreville to Bucksville, of the second grade." February Term--1830) He apparently came to Bibb Co., AL, c1826-1830, after the birth of his daughter Mary. He served as Justice of the Peace for Bibb Co. as late as 1837 and was still buying land as late as 1842. Around 1849 he moved to Bienville Parish, LA. He is listed in the 1850 Bienville Parish, LA census with children Amanda age 21, Oliver J. age 18, and Romulus age 12. His wife Rachel, must have died before the census as she is not listed. In the same census were living close by daughter Sarah (Steele) Canterbury and son Richard J. Steele. (From "The Steeles of Bibb, A Pioneer Alabama Family", by Miriam & Parker Steele) According to Miriam Steele, Robert owned land near Simsboro in Lincoln Parish, LA. He apparently donated land for Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He and his wife are buried there.
